Spring Conference on Saturday 6 th February 2010County Hall, Durham. Visual Processing and Cross Sensory Interventions Speaker: Ian Jordan FBDO CL MFDO FADOThe aim of the day is to provide an introduction to vision and visual processing problems in individuals with special needs. Look at crossing the senses, faces, reading and writing, conceptualisation, assessment and treatment .Ian Jordan was brought up in Jarrow, County Durham and qualified as an optician in 1980. He is an internationally recognised lecturer and has been described as both .charismatic. and .the best lecturer in optics.. His presentations incorporate video, interactive demonstrations and thought provoking analysis. An award winning researcher, author, inventor and even sometimes the .expert. in TV documentaries, he is happy in any environment, from world level academic conferences, to conveying his enthusiasm to non specialist audiences in a subject we are all interested in; how we make sense of what we see, and how our senses work together.Ian was the optician in "My family and Autism" a documentary about Luke Jackson and his family. He has spoken at the World Autism Conference, national conferences of Autism Society of America, the National Autistic Society, Autism Medical and many other autism groups. He also has a specialist optometric practice in Ayr which is happy to see even the most complex individuals through the NHS. This presentation is at an introductory level, fast moving, both profound and at times funny. Don 't miss it if your child has Aspergers syndrome, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, cerebral palsy or complex special needs. You will almost certainly be surprised. This presentation is essential for parents of children with special needs, for teachers, classroom assistants, psychologists etc. "I recently attended a seminar given by Ian. The research which has been carried out in the area of visual processing and sensory interventions is highly interesting and thought provoking and the way in which Ian presented the information was brilliant. He used video and really life examples to demonstrate the impact which visual processing has on all individuals and the interventions which can be used to help with sensory processing in those with Aspergers syndrome, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, cerebral palsy or complex special needs. I was so impressed I had to arrange for Ian to come and speak in Durham. He looks not only at supporting individuals with coloured lens but discusses the environmental impact of lighting on visual processing. I for one was amazed, having not being able to taste food for five years. When Ian gave me a particular coloured lens to look through I could suddenly taste the chocolate I was eating! If this could have such an affect on me then what benefits may to provide for our children? ."Helen Geldard. RGN. RM. MA. Autism. Application form <Back to top>
